[When you were gone]

When you were gone

I wandered off

Into a place

That seemed pleasant

It had the pretty warmth and charm—

The furnace, hearth, and tulip bulbs—

The people there were genial

Smiles every face did show

But—

The fireplace I could not venture

The garden was a boundary, too

The warmth, the flora, and the grins

All sneered cynically—without you
